The Marreeba Wheelbarrow Race: Chillagoe As a town with a prominent mining past, Chillagoe is a fitting finish line for The Great Wheelbarrow Race. The town thrives on tourism with most visitors taking a trip to the Chillagoe Ore Smelter – a landscape dominated by towering chimney stacks.
The smelter operated during the early 1900’s at a time when Chillagoe yielded tonnes of copper, lead, silver and gold. Below ground, there are the fabulous Chillagoe-Mungana Caves to explore – a network of between 600 and 1,000 limestone caverns. Guided tours can be booked at the Chillagoe Hub – an information and tourist centre in the town’s main street.
