The Marreeba Wheelbarrow Race: Marreeba Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands provides the starting line for one of the region’s most colourful annual events – the Great Wheelbarrow Race. This fund-raising foot race incorporating wheelbarrows covers around 140 kilometres from Mareeba through to Chillagoe, following a tourist drive known as the Wheelbarrow Way.
The event and the route celebrate the pioneers who first pushed their wheelbarrows west in search of gold during the mid-1800’s. Mareeba’s main street hosts a parade of hundreds of race competitors, decked out in fancy costume, as they make their way to the official start line. The race is organised through the Tablelands Regional Council.
