Fraser Lakes Now is a great time to visit Fraser Island, as the south east’s recent rain has filled the lakes to the brim. The 120 waterholes on the island represent the second highest concentration of lakes in Australia.
Basin Lake is located an easy walk from Central Station. It’s so small it only takes 10 minutes to walk its circumference. Another lake worth visiting is Lake Wabby, the one and only example of a barrage lake on the island. It was formed when a sandblow blocked a spring fed stream and some estimate the lake may disappear in 50 years.
Kingfisher Bay Resort offers personalised tours $250 per person for a minimum of four people. The package includes a customised itinerary, park entry and a gourmet lunch. Combine your tour with a stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort. During you can stay 3 nights, pay for 2, with hotel rooms starting at $198 per night. Terms and conditions apply – contact the resort.
For another great way to see the island’s lakes, Air Fraser provides 15 minute joy flights. Tours start at $70 per person. Make a booking or simply find them on Seventy Mile Beach to organise a seat on the next available flight.
