Dean and Chris take on Hinchinbrook Island Hinchinbrook Island was declared a national park in 1932 and, at the time, was the largest island national park in Australia. These days, the best way to experience the wonders of Hinchinbrook is to undertake the world famous Thorsborne Trail.
The 32km track takes approximately four days to complete. Walkers must be completely self sufficient in terms of food and equipment. It is also important to remember that everything you take onto the island must leave with you.
The track isn’t graded or hardened, and is only suitable for experienced bushwalkers and campers. To protect the National Park, a limited number of walkers are allowed to walk the trail at any one time.
Walkers must also camp each night throughout their trek and permits are required. Be sure to book at least 12 months in advance to secure a spot. The camp grounds have basic toilet facilities and it is vital that all walkers have appropriate camping equipment, remembering that it will have to be carried throughout the entire trail.
Commercial water taxis from Cardwell and Lucinda transfer campers and walkers to the island and the best time of year to attempt the walk is between the cooler months of April and September.
As the trail is run by the QLD Parks and Wildlife Service, it only costs $5 to camp each night, or $20 for a family.
