Home Movies - Surfers Ski Gardens Footage dating back to 1963, captured by viewer Russell Hastings’ father while holidaying on the Gold Coast, shows the very beginning of a tourist attraction on the Nerang River. The Surfers Paradise Ski Gardens was founded by developer Keith Williams in 1958, where professional skiers showed off their skills on the water. National and international attention kept Surfers Ski Gardens running for another 13 years with the Australian Water Ski championships in 1959 and the World titles in 1965.
In the early seventies the development of Surfers Paradise saw Keith Williams relocated his show to the Southport Spit. He combined his passion for water skiing and the love for marine life by transforming his show into one of the Gold Coast’s favourite theme parks… Seaworld. At Seaworld tourists can revisit the 60’s at the ‘Waterski Wipeout’ show.
The costumes and the tricks may have improved but the memories of Surfers Paradise Ski Gardens lives on. If you have anything that you would like to share then please contact the office and tell us your story.
