Sommerville ValleyThe scenery in Girraween National Park is unique and striking. The Pyramid, a massive granite dome left from volcanic activity hundreds of millions of years ago, is just one highlight of the park. It’s a 3.4 km return hike, and it can get pretty steep, but the Pyramid takes only about two hours return, and anyone with a moderate level of fitness will be able to make it.
There are almost 20 kilometres of walking tracks within Girraween so you’ll probably need more than one day to explore them all. Right near the entrance to the walking trails are two campsites. Bald Rock Creek and Castle Rock campsites both have toilets, BBQ’s and plenty of space. But keep in mind that when water levels are low, showers are not available.
Another option, just a few kilometres down the road is Sommerville Valley Tourist Park. It’s situated on the banks of Storm King Dam, and there are plenty of amenities and loads of room to pitch a tent, or park your caravan or campervan. A non-powered tent site goes for $19 dollars a day and a powered caravan site for $22. There are special rates for longer stays.
