John Young Birdman

For John Young, nature has been his lifelong love affair.

An interest that began as a kid on a cattle property, grew so much, that he has dedicated most of his adult life to spreading the word about the beauty of the Australian bush.

John’s made films and documentaries. He’s led bird-watching tours. He’s been a consultant to wildlife gurus like David Attenborough and he’s advised governments on conservation issues.

But the Tyto Wetlands could well be his greatest achievement yet.

Over the past three years, John has been the driving force behind a project to turn 110 hectares of soggy, weed-infected town land on the edge of Ingham into a thriving wetlands habitat.

Originally earmarked as the site for new sugar canefields, the Tyto Wetlands is now a million dollar tourist attraction and a magnet for birdwatchers from around the world.

John also runs guided bird watching tours, with two leaving before the end of the year. His Regent Honey Eater Tour leaves Brisbane on the 17th of September for six nights travel through the Warrumbungle, Girraween and Lamington National Parks.

John also leads a Red Bellied Pitta tour from Cairns in November.
